Damascus: Advisor of the Iranian Islamic Revolution's Supreme Leader for International Affairs, Ali Akbar Velayati, said that the western countries waged a war against Syria to compensate for their losses in the regions of North Africa and the Middle East.

In a speech on the occasion of starting the new academic year at the Iranian National Defense University, Velayati stressed that Syria's victory over the armed terrorists groups, USA, and western and Arab countries is inevitable.

He added that some countries which wanted to downfall the Syrian government are now adopting Iran's calls for holding dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition.

He highlighted that the stances of some regional countries, which were arming and funding the Syrian opposition, have changed in the last period.

Velayati expressed regret over the stances of some Arab countries which know nothing about democracy and falsely pretend they are keen on the Syrians and their right to vote.

He said that the confrontation line between the East and West is in the Middle East and in Syria, adding that the presence of US and Russian military fleets in the Mediterranean Sea proves that a new cold war began, with the Middle East in its core.
