Wenlock Olympian 2012: Inspiration behind modern games

London: There would be no modern Olympic Games without the 'Wenlock Olympian Games', the multi sport event that has taken place in the English country town of Much Wenlock since 1850. In 1890 Baron Pierre de Coubertin, at the invitation of its founder Dr William Penny Brookes, came to observe the event, and what he saw gave him the idea that would become the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. With the Games returning to Great Britain, the 2012 Wenlock Games has attracted the attention of the World's press.
