Washington: United States President Barack Obama called Egypt’s former Prime Minister and runner up of Presidential elections – Ahmed Shafiq.

Obama commended Shafiq on a “well-run” campaign and encouraged him to continue to play a role in Egyptian politics by supporting the democratic process and working to unify the Egyptian people.

The President also emphasized his interest in working together with the new Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and all Egyptian political groups to advance the shared interests between the United States and Egypt.

Notably, Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood has won Egypt's presidential race with 51.7% of last weekend’s run-off vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq.
