Lyon, France: The arrest
at Ukraine's international airport of two fugitives wanted in the United Arab
Emirates for a substantial jewelry theft theft highlights the essential role of
swift international police ooperation and intelligence sharing via INTERPOL, a
senior INTERPOL official has said.
The two
wanted men, one Turkish and the other Azerbaijani, were the subject of a global
alert known as an INTERPOL diffusion issued by INTERPOL’s National Central
Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi.
They were
detained in Kiev following close coordination by INTERPOL’s Command and
Coordination Centre (CCC) with its NCBs in Abu Dhabi and Kiev, as well as with
its Middle East and North Africa sub-directorate, to locate the two wanted
fugitives while they were on a flight destined for Kiev.
Suspected
stolen goods, including jewelry, were recovered from the two suspects upon
their arrival and detention at Kiev airport.
“This case
demonstrates the very real and valuable results which can be achieved by
INTERPOL member countries working together, especially when supported by
INTERPOL’s Command and Coordination Centre and global policing tools,” said
INTERPOL's Director for Operational Support, Mick O'Connell.
"INTERPOL's
National Central Bureaus in Abu Dhabi and Kiev, and the law enforcement
authorities in Dubai and Ukraine are to be commended for their role in sharing
vital identifying information with INTERPOL's global network to apprehend these
two international fugitives," said Mr O'Connell.
INTERPOL’s
Command and Coordination Centre is the operations room at INTERPOL’s General
Secretariat headquarters. Operating together with a second CCC site which
opened in 2011 at the INTERPOL Regional Bureau in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it
offers a vital point of contact for any member country seeking urgent police
information, services or facing a crisis situation.
