Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI to resign on Feb 28

Vatican City: The Vatican has announced that Pope Benedict XVI will step down as pope on February 28.

Giving the reason for his astonishing announcement Pope Benedict said he no longer had the strength to fulfill the duties of his office.

The 85-year-old Pope said he had realised that his strength of working had decorated over past few months.

“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he said according to a statement from the Vatican.

The pontiff would step down on1900 GMT on February 28, leaving the office vacant until a successor is chosen, a Vetican spokesperson announced.
