Ankara: Two security guards were killed and several others were
sustained grave injuries when a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive
device outside the US Embassy in the Turkish capital on Friday, local
authorities said.
The explosion on February 1 damaged the compound's outer
wall, ripping the concrete from around a doorway and sending debris flying into
the street.
Police cordoned off the street in the Cankaya neighbourhood
where many other state institutions and embassies are also located.
None of the outfit has yet claimed the responsibility of the
blast, but Kurdish rebels and Islamist
militants are active in Turkey. Kurdish rebels, who are fighting for autonomy
in the Kurdish-dominated southeast, have dramatically stepped up attacks in
Turkey over the last year.
