Chennai: Former Maharashtra chief minister and Indian Union Minister of Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was undergoing treatment for a serious liver ailment and died at a Chennai hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Doctors attending on him confirmed his death and his family members were informed. Deshmukh died of multiple organ failure around 1:40 pm.
His funeral will be take place in the Babhalgaon village in Latur. Deshmukh was survived by his wife Vaishali Deshmukh and three sons including Ritesh Deshmukh.
The Union Minister was shifted to the Chennai's super specialty hospital on August 6, evening after reports that his condition was critical.
The doctors were planning to conduct liver transplantation when the Minister was hospitalized here in critical condition, even though attempt were made to retrieve the liver from a donor at the hospital for him.
The 67-year-old former Maharashtra chief minister had shown signs of improvement and had been on and off the ventilator before being prepared for a transplant.
Even after Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh was named in the Adarsh housing society scam and was under fire after 26/11 Mumbai terror attack , he was considered as a grassroots leader and respected by many.
