Both houses resume, Assam violence leads to uproar as Advani initiates discussion

New Delhi: Both the houses of Parliament resume amid uproar over ethnic violence in Assam as Bhartiya Janata Party veteran leader L.K. Advani initiated the debate over the issue.

Earlier, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon by the Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar when the opposition parties broke down heavily over the Congress- led UPA government and demanded action on Assam ethnic violence rather Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance to discuss all the issue in the Parliament.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday come out with assurance as he said the government is prepared to discuss any issue in accordance with rules and hoped the opposition will allow the two houses to function smoothly without disruptions.

What happened when:  

12:20: Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, initiated the discussion on Assam violence and with this he threw the ball rolling for a huge political debate. Advani said numbers of people displaced and the incident was unprecedented. He insisted that the Assam violence was not ethnic but the core problem was one of unchecked illegal immigration.

“The whole country’s security establishment is at risk,” he said.

12: 15: Advani initiated the discussion on ethnic violence in Kokrajhar and other parts of Assam as he alleged that  by accepting the adjournment motion the government has showed that it felt responsible for the condition in Assam. 

12:00: Advani continued his discussion despite of the furore in the background.

12:00:  Parliament resumed after being adjourned over the issue of Assam violence. BJP leader L.K. Advani initiated the discussion on the issue.

11:30: MPs created a ruckus over the ethnic violence in Assam's Kokrajhar and consequently the Rajya Sabha was also adjourned  till noon.

11:21: Meira Kumar accepted the adjournment motion over ethnic violence in Assam. Session was to resume at 12 noon.

11:20: Prime Minister assured that government was ready to discuss the issue on the floor of the house but with accordance of rules and procedures. 

“The government is ready for any discussion in accordance with rules and procedures in Parliament,” Singh told reporters outside Parliament today.

10:05 am: The Bharatiya Janata Party moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on the Kokrajhar violence in Assam.

Currently the debate is on amid news of uproar.

The monsoon session of Parliament, which will continue till 7 September, will also be the first session with newly appointed Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde taking over as leader of the house in the Lok Sabha.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram who earlier had boycotted by the BJP during the winter session, will face the heat on the Aircel-Maxis deal during the month-long Monsoon session.

It fathom that the Left parties are ready to corner the government over the issue of the Food Security bill in a big way. They are also expected to take up the killing of tribals in Chhattisgarh and the violence at the Maruti plant in Manesar.
