Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch on Sunday managed to arrest 24 people for Saturday's violence near Azad Maidan.

Two people were killed and at least 55 others were injured when a protest over ethnic clashes in Assam turned violent there.

Those arrested will be produced in a Mumbai court later on Sunday. They have been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including rioting and damaging of public and private property.

Investigation is now on to determine if the violence was planned and the protesters were armed.

Meanwhile, the Indian Express, a daily reported that organisers of the event have admitted “irresponsible speech” that led to rioting.

In the meantime, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders are expected to meet Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today.

The BJP leaders will reportedly demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for the violence in Mumbai.
