Damascus: Syrian Foreign
and Expatriates Ministry said Nawaf al-Fares made press statements country’s ambassador
to Iraq, Nawaf Fares, who announced Wednesday his defection to the opposition,
has been "discharged” on Thursday.
In a video statement posted on
Facebook, Nawaf al-Fares declared that he had joined the ranks of what he
called the "people's revolution in Syria."
The Ministry
announced that Nawaf al-Fares was relieved of his duties according to rules and
has no longer any relation with the Syrian Embassy in Baghdad or with the
Foreign and Expatriates Ministry.
Earlier, United Nations envoy Kofi Annan Annan
told the Security Council that both Iran and Iraq supported a plan for a
Syrian-led political transition in Damascus.
