Nine die in Kokrajhar’s community clashes, curfew clamped

Guwahati: Indefinite curfew was imposed in Kokrajhar town of Assam following outbreak of a sporadic violence involving two communities that left at least nine persons dead since Friday night.

Tension prevailed when the violence began following the lynching of four youths by some miscreants at Joypur under Kokrajhar Police Station last night at about 8.30 pm. The retaliatory incidents thismorning were reported from Duramari and Narabari under Kokrajhar Police Station and Kodaldoha under Fakiragram Police Station.

The Kokrajhar district administration also promulgated Section 144 CrPC throughout the district.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi rushed Transport Minister Chandan Brahma to take stock of the situation. Mr. Brahma has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

The State government has announced ex gratia of Rs. 3 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
