Brussels: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has welcomed Pakistan’s announcement on opening ground supply lines to Afghanistan.

In a statement issued to the press, Rasmussen said, “I welcome Pakistan's announcement that the ground supply lines to Afghanistan are now opening.  The resumption of transit arrangements for ISAF supplies through Pakistan demonstrates strengthened cooperation between ISAF nations and our partner Pakistan.”

NATO chief asserted that Pakistan has an “important role to play” in supporting a secure Afghanistan in a stable region.

He further added, “As ISAF nations agreed at the Chicago Summit, regional cooperation is key to promoting a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.”

Notably, Pakistan had blocked Afghan supply lines last November following a NATO airstrike which mistakenly killed around 24 Pakistani soldiers.
