New Delhi: Meager monsoon rains have raised concerns in India, one of the world’s biggest producers of food crops such as wheat, rice, and sugar.
Meager monsoons mean meager crops, and meager income, for Indian farmers. In many parts of India farmers depend heavily on the annual rains to water their land.
According to the Metrological Department, rains have been 30 percent below average in June over most parts of the country.
For India, scant monsoon is matter of concerns since the sowing of summer crops has been delayed in number of regions.
Meteorologists hope that rains this month could help bridge the shortfall.
As per the government officials, contingency plans will be in place in case the monsoon does not pick up pace over the next two weeks.
