India: Home Minister to visit riot-hit Assam

New Delhi: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will visit the violence affected areas of Assam tomorrow.

During his two day visit, he will review the law and order situation in Kokrajhar and neighboring areas and will have meetings with senior officers of the state government. He would also assess the impact of relief measures and other steps taken to normalize the situation.

Notably, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also visited the riot-hit Kokrajhar yesterday where he had announced an assistance of Rs. 2 lakh from the National Relief Fund to the family of each of those who have lost their lives in these tragic events.

An amount of Rs. 50,000 will be provided as immediate relief to the seriously injured. To aid in rehabilitation of the affected people, an assistance of Rs. 30,000 will be given to those whose houses are fully damaged and Rs. 20,000 for partially damaged houses.

While addressing media persons, Singh assured, “Central Government will work closely with the State Government to bring back normalcy to the lives of the people affected by these very tragic events.”

Meanwhile, as per the media reports, the indefinite curfew clamped in the Kokrajhar district has been has been relaxed for Sunday.

According to officials, the death toll in the ethnic clash between tribals-minority immigrants remained at 53.
