Patience with Pakistan ‘reaching limits’: US Defence Secretary

Thursday, June 07, 2012
Kabul: United States Secretary of Defence Leone Panetta today said that US is reaching the limits of its patience with Pakistan serving as a safe haven for terrorists attacking American forces in Afghanistan.

“We are reaching the limits of our patience, and for that reason it is extremely important that Pakistan take action to prevent this kind of safe haven,” Panetta proclaimed while addressing a press conference.

The Defence Secretary asserted that he will continue to push the Pakistanis to deal with the Haqqani network.

“We will continue to make it clear that it is an intolerable situation. We will take whatever steps necessary to protect our forces -- that’s a principle that we always stand by. To make that happen we have to have the cooperation of Pakistan to take steps to control the Haqqani threat on their side of the border,” he added.

Panetta is in Kabul to meet senior NATO and Afghan leaders.

This is his fourth trip to Afghanistan as a Defence Secretary.
