Nobel laureates, scientific experts, politicians and young people urge the world to take action at Rio+20

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Stockholm: Top scientists and thinkers from around the globe, including several Nobel Laureates, will come together at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to deliver a powerful message to world leaders: The time to act is now; nations urgently need to shift to a sustainable path.

Over the past 20 years, science has made tremendous progress in assessing the human pressures on our planet and the risks associated with unsustainable development. Based on these advancements, Rio+20 takes place at the dawn of a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, in which humanity constitutes the major driving force of change at the planetary scale.

To support the political discussions at Rio+20 and the subsequent formulation of Sustainable Development Goals, the organizers of the Nobel Symposium series, the Fundação Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável and the UN Secretary General's High Level Panel on Global Sustainability will gather leading thinkers and scientists on sustainable development for a high level dialogue on 17 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
