Hyderabad: YS Jagan Mohan Reddy led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has swept the Andhra Pradesh by-polls by winning 15 out of 18 Assembly constituencies and the Nellore Lok Sabha seat.

The ruling Congress managed to bag two seats - Narasapuram and Ramachandrapuram.

According to officials, the YSR Congress emerged victorious in Narasannapet, Payakaraopet, Prathipadu, Polavaram, Rajampet, Kodur, Rayachoti, Allagadda, Yemmiganur assembly segments.

These by-polls were popularly termed “semi-final” to the 2014 general elections in certain sections of Indian press and were seen as a litmus test for Jagan.

Earlier, Jagan was arrested by  the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and sent to jail on May 27 in an illegal assets case when he was busy campaigning for the party.

Notably, the by-elections were caused by the resignation of one member of parliament and disqualification of 18 legislators of the Congress party who had switched loyalties to the YSRCP.
