European Parliament to discuss human rights in China, Sudan and South Sudan

Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Brussels/Strasbourg: Parliament's human rights subcommittee is holding a hearing on the human rights situation in China, followed by a discussion on human rights abuses in Sudan and South Sudan on Wednesday.

As a result of the recent clashes between Sudan and South Sudan an estimated 35 000 refugees from Sudan's Blue Nile state have fled into South Sudan, which is already hosting some 150 000 refugees from Sudan. MEPs and experts will examine the sharply deteriorating humanitarian situation and the risk of human rights abuses faced by civilians.

The hearing on China will focus on the situation of human rights defenders, freedom of expression and methods and conditions of detention. It will feed into the forthcoming EP report on EU-China relations. Representatives from media and human rights organizations and the EU's External Action Service will take part in the debate, with a video statement by a Chinese dissident.
